NFPA 1001 and NFPA 472 – Complete Firefighter Program

Description
Students will be able to take the cognitive materials learned over their 10 week session and have instruction on the practical components of the NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualification and the NFPA 472 Standard for competence of responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction –Operations Level. This 5 week skill development program offers the student the ability to complete the requirements of the practical components with training from a qualified instructor who will train and mentor the required skills to be ready for the evaluations required for the Complete Fire Fighter program.
This program contains Firefighter Level 1, Firefighter Level 2, Hazmat Awareness and Hazmat Operations – Evaluation and Skills Training will be held per Champions Fire College Scheduling

Firefighter Level 1
Course Description:
The student will identify the roles and responsibilities of a firefighter in the fire service. The students will define the basic functions of the fire service. The student will describe the basic types of fire apparatus and tools and their functions. The student will demonstrate competencies in basic firefighting techniques such as search and rescue, ventilation, and ladder basics. The student will identify and describe the correct use of hose lines and fire streams. The students will identify and analyze general safety procedures and the use of personal protective clothing. The student will describe the correct procedures and techniques for the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The student will identify potential hazardous materials incidents.
This course is designed to prepare the participant to be able to perform firefighting functions at an intermediate level meeting minimum national standards according to NFPA 1001. The student will be able to identify safe working practices. The student will be able to demonstrate skills in search and rescue, ladders, fire control, public safety, forcible entry, ropes, and fire department communications. Students will take an accredited exam and be required to participate in accredited practical skill examinations.
Accredited Certification Level:
In order to obtain your Firefighter I certification, you are required to take your Champions Fire College Certificate of Course Completion and complete a certification exam and skills evaluation as provided by Champions Fire College in accordance with the requirements of your province or state.

NFPA 1001: Standard for Professional Fire Fighter Qualifications

Firefighter Level 2
Course Description:
This course is designed to prepare the participant to be able to perform firefighting functions at an advanced level meeting national standards according to NFPA 1001. The student will be able to identify safe working practices for fire ground operations. The student will be able to identify building construction types and associated hazards. The student will be able to conduct hose and hydrant tests and water flow calculations. The student will be able to identify the need for implementing the incident management system. The student will be able to identify the types of foam applications and demonstrate the ability to use foam systems. The student will be able to identify extrication tools and methods and demonstrate the use of the tools.
Prerequisites:
Students must be at least 18 years of age; have attained Firefighter I certification; be physically capable of performing the duties required in the course (to be determined by the local fire department physician); and have obtained entry-level emergency care training that includes: CPR Certification, basic control of bleeding and basic infection control.
Accredited Certification Level:
In order to obtain your Firefighter II certification, you are required to take the Champions Fire College Certificate of Course Completion and complete a certification exam and skills evaluation as provided Champions Fire College in accordance with the requirements of your province or state.

Hazmat Awareness
Course Description:
This course is in accordance with NFPA 472 and is designed to provide personnel the ability to analyze an incident to determine both the hazardous materials/WMD present and the basic hazard and response information for each hazardous materials/WMD by completing the following tasks: Detect the presence of hazardous materials/WMD; Surveying a hazardous materials/WMD incident from a safe location to identify the name, UN/NA identification number, or type placard applied for any hazardous materials/WMD involved; Collect hazard and response information from the current addition of the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook. Upon completion of training, students will take a certification written exam only.
Prerequisites:
At least 18 years of age.

Hazmat Operations
Course Description:
This course is in accordance with NFPA 472 and is designed for operations level responders. Students must already be at the Awareness level and be able to analyze a hazardous materials/WMD incident to determine the scope of the problem and potential outcomes by completing the following tasks: Survey the hazardous materials/WMD incident to identify the containers and materials involved, determine whether hazardous materials/WMD have been released, and evaluate the surrounding conditions; Collect hazard and response information from material safety data sheets (MSDS), CHEMTREC/CANUTEC/SETIQ, and shipper and manufacturer contracts; Predict the likely behavior of a hazardous materials/WMD agent as well as its container; Estimate the potential harm at a hazardous materials/WMD incident. Students will take a written certification exam and participate in accredited practical skill examinations.
Note: Includes HazMat Operational Core and mission specific competencies 472, 6.2 & 6.6.
Prerequisites:
HazMat Awareness certified.
Accredited Certification Level:
Certification Exam. The exam requires successful completion of a final test as well as signed skill sheets.
